PSI

The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test-Standard version is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.

The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.

The PSI-Standard includes both monosyllabic words and and two sets of sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were use to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.

The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT) – Standard

The Random Gap Detection Test-Standard (RGDT) is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 5 and up using non-verbal stimuli. It is considered a temporal test using temporal resolution and is sensitive to cortical particularly left temporal lobe lesions.

This test is a variation on the AFT-R.  It differs from the AFT-R:  First, in the AFT-R, the stimulus presentations are in serial order from no gap to large gap and back to no gap, often resulting in perseveration in some subjects.  Since randomization successfully eliminates the problem of perseveration, the RGDT gap duration presentations of the stimuli are randomized.  Second, the number of test frequencies has been reduced to four.  Third, Click stimuli have been added. The developer states it takes approximately 10 minutes to administer and score the RGDT.

The Random Gap Detection Test-Standard (RGDT) includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The 31-page manual is comprised of sections on development, background, administration, and interpretation. It includes normative data for ages 5-7, 8, 9, and 10-11. The developer recommends using the normative data for the 10-11 age category as a guideline for testing patients older than 11. (Normative values for the AFT-R are included for ages 5-70 due to their similarity.) Available from Auditec, Inc.  Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US locations.

*What is the difference between the WIPI First Edition and WIPI Second Edition?

  1. The original authors of the WIPI developed a second edition to clear up the ambiguity of the first edition. In some cases the picture contains a more modern depiction, such as the coke bottle is now 2-liter bottle. About one picture per page was changed.
  2. The word list was changed. Therefore, the WIPI recording must correspond to the correct version.
  3. The WIPI First Edition is available only on CD-Rom. Picture CD-Roms are designed to be displayed on a computer screen; however, customers may print the pictures and place them in a three-ring binder. WIPI pictures must be printed in color to obtain accurate test results. The WIPI Second Edition is available either or CD-Rom or as a printed book.
  4. If you are unsure whether you own the first or second edition, check the color of the cover. If you own one of the old printed WIPI First Edition books, the cover will be either blue or green. The WIPI Second Edition is a dark red/ maroon color.

Does Auditec offer a picture-pointing test for young children in other languages? Yes, a similar test is available in Spanish called the Spanish Pediatric Picture Identification Test. If your pediatric patient speaks a different language, consider employing a test with nonverbal stimuli such as the Sound Effects Recognition Test.

Gaps In Noise (GIN)

The Gaps In Noise (GIN) test is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 7 and older using non-verbal stimuli. It is designed to measure temporal resolution.  Temporal resolution refers to the ability to detect changes either in the duration of an auditory stimulus and/or the time intervals or gaps of silence embedded within an auditory stimulus.  The ability to detect small silent intervals is an important factor in speech perception. This GIN test is a  valuable test for the evaluation of this ability.

The GIN test is composed of a series or lists of noise bursts which contain various intervals of silence.  The recording consists of four forms called lists plus a shorter practice list to ensure the patient understands the task.  The silent intervals vary from 0 (i.e. no gap) to 20 msec.  The gaps, or periods of silence, are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20 msec.  There are a total of 60 randomized gaps (6 of each gap) in each list (series). Administration time is approximately 35 minutes.

To facilitate accurate scoring the recording is two channels, one being the test track, the other, for the examiner, indicates with a brief tone when the gap occurs in the other (test) track.

The Gaps In Noise includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The three-page instructions include information on administration, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is included for ages 8 and up. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping within the contiguous US.

Dichotic Word Listening Test

The Dichotic Word Listening Test (DWLT) is popular with audiologists and psychologists. It is often considered an auditory processing disorder test. It was developed specifically to demonstrate relative unilateral extinction or suppressions in neurologic patients with focal electrophysiological lesions, neuropsychiatric patients whose symptoms are presumed to be associated with underlying electrophysiological dysfunction and patients with so-called “subclinical” EEG abnormalities following closed head injury. Since observations indicate that multiple neuropathological processes impair dichotic listening performance, the DWLT may prove relevant to investigation of brainstem disorders, subcortical lesions, etc.

The DWLT stimuli are common words varying in length from one to three syllables.  The test is in two equivalent parts with 10 practice items and 30 test items in each part.

The Dichotic Word Listening Test includes a) audio recording, b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The five-page instructions consist of background, administration, scoring, and interpretation. The instructions include grade-specific normative data for kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, and sixth grades as well as adults. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.

APAL

The APAL test uses oral production of the letters of the alphabet. It is a closed-set of the 26 letters. Responses may be oral, by sign, or by pointing to a response board (supplied). The test consists of five forms; all 26 letters are used. Scoring is weighted by the proximity of the response to the phonetic content of the letter. Watch the video! (See below.)

The Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters (APAL) was developed for use with hearing impaired children for whom the more standard tests are unsuitable. Children may be unfamiliar with some of the pictured items on the WIPI, PSI, or NU-CHIPS, or some of the PBK-50 words may not be in the child’s vocabulary or the child’s speech may be unintelligible, or the materials may be too easy or uninteresting. In these cases, the APAL may prove useful. The administration time of the APAL is approximately 16 minutes.

The APAL includes: 1) alphabet letter easel, 2) audio test recording, 3) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The two-page instructions encompass sections on test candidates, procedure, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is provided, but it is not age-specific. Child Spondees

The Child Spondees is considered a speech threshold (or speech reception threshold-SRT) test. It is a list of spondaic words that was selected to be familiar to children. AUDiTEC™ recorded 51 words in one randomization. The medium SRT is 20 dB SPL. (Consider Picture Spondee Words for young or non-verbal patients.)

The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

Child Spondees includes a) audio recording and b) printed word list. This product does not include administration instructions or normative data.
