Geographic Inequality of APD Testing Availability
If you suspected a child was suffering from an auditory processing disorder, how far would their parents have to drive to get him or her tested? In certain states like New York, there is a possibility public school students could be tested right in their own school! Sadly, children in other states have to travel over 100 miles to receive APD testing!
If it is tempting to simply accept this geographic inequality of APD testing availability as “just the way it is,” consider the long-term effects of a society that does not offer necessary diagnosis and treatment. A parent writes, “It took my daughter until 13 years to be diagnosed and we began at age 4….APD isn’t well treated in our schools in California and it destroyed our family’s life. My daughter eventually ran away, started vaping and dropped out of school….APD destroys hearts. Every child deserves to be understood and to understand.” Do you agree?
Here are some practical ways to help:
- Increase awareness of auditory processing disorder and ask parents to do the same. This could be in the form of writing blogs, public speaking, and reaching out to local special school districts.
- Offer APD testing if you are a qualified professional. This could require reaching out in professional forums to ask for mentoring and advice.
- Persuade health insurance companies to cover APD testing and encourage parents to do the same.
If you already offer APD testing, we want to say how much we appreciate the difference you make in society. Auditec, Inc. is committed to helping you find the best tools for you to continue your efforts.
Perfect Time to Start APD Testing
Whether you are in a hospital, school, or private practice setting, NOW is the time to start APD testing. You have time to review the materials and be ready for your clients when people get back to their daily lives. A popular question around here is “What APD battery should I buy?” If you are just starting out, I would recommend one of the following:
The APD Battery (Item CD170-9) is ideal for communities that have non-English speakers or areas with multiple cultural accents because all of the tests are nonverbal. It includes the Gaps In Noise (GIN), Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT), Pitch Pattern Sequence-Musiek Version, Duration Pattern Sequence-Musiek Version, and Masking Level Difference-Tones. Each test has its own instructions with normative data for various ages. The APD Battery costs $329.75 US funds plus shipping (free shipping in the US).
The MAPA-2 Battery (Item CD179-9) is another popular choice. This battery includes a mix of verbal and nonverbal recordings. It is comprised of monaural, temporal, and binaural testing. A testing manual is provided with interpretation for ages 7-14. The MAPA-2 Battery costs $215.00 US funds plus shipping (free shipping in the US).
The SCAN-3 Battery is also widely used in the audiology community. It can be used as a screening test or diagnostic tool. This battery also consists of both verbal and nonverbal recordings. The SCAN-3 Child Version (Item CD121-9) includes a manual and normative data for ages 5-12. It costs $350.60 US funds. The SCAN-3 Adult & Adolescent Version (Item CD122-9) includes a manual and interpretation for ages 13-60. This version also costs $350.60 US funds plus shipping (free shipping in the US).
Many factors can affect your choice of APD Batteries such as language, age group, and budget. Whether you choose the APD Battery, MAPA-2, SCAN-3, or decide to build a custom APD Battery from the large variety in our catalog, Auditec is here to supply your needs with fast friendly service.

TAPS-4© Kit
The Test of Auditory Processing Skills Version 4© (TAPS-4) provides information about language processing and comprehension skills across three intersecting areas: phonological processing, auditory memory and listening comprehension. These areas underpin the development of effective listening and communication skills, and are critical to the development of higher order language skills, including literacy skills.
• The Phonological Processing Index portion is administered using recorded speech. Subtests include Word (Pair) Discrimination, Phonological Deletion, Phonological Blending, and Syllabic Blending (Supplemental).
• The Auditory Memory Index portion is administered using live voice. Subtests include Number Memory Forward, Word Memory, Sentence Memory, and Number Memory Reversed (Supplemental).
• The Listening Comprehension Index portion is administered using recorded speech for subtests Processing Oral Directions (without background noise) and Auditory Figure-Ground (Processing Oral Directions with background noise) (Supplemental); however, the Auditory Comprehension subtest is administered using live voice.
Administration time is 60-90 minutes.
The TAPS-4© includes a) audio recording, b) manual and score forms. The extensive manual includes normative data for ages 5-21.
