Auditory Processing Disorder Testing

It is recommended that audiologists use established, reliable tests with both verbal and non-verbal stimuli that assess different auditory processes. Auditory Processing Disorder Tests are often broken down into four categories. The categories are 1) DICHOTIC LISTENING for binaural integration and separation, 2) TEMPORAL PROCESSING for auditory pattern temporal ordering-APTO and temporal resolution), 3) MONAURAL LOW-REDUNDANCY (monaural separation closure-MSC), and 4) BINAURAL INTERACTION. Masking Level Difference-Speech©

The Masking Level Difference-Speech© is an auditory processing disorder test. It is considered a binaural interaction test sensitive to low brainstem. This recording employs spondee words imbedded in speech spectrum noise bursts. It is in two sections; section 1 is where both the noise and the spondees are in phase, section 2 is where the noise is in phase and the spondees are 180 degrees out of phase. A release from masking is expected in the latter section.

The Masking Level Difference-Speech© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score form as printable pdf files. The one-page instructions contain administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Normative data is included, but it is not age-specific.

The Rapid Alternating Speech© is an auditory processing disorder test for both children and adults using verbal stimuli. This binaural interaction test is sensitive to the low brainstem. It consists of a series of sentences that alternate between the ears as they are spoken. The period is 600 msec. with a 50% duty cycle (i.e. 300 msec. per ear).

The Spondee Binaural Fusion© is an auditory processing disorder test for both children and adults using verbal stimuli. It is considered a binaural interaction test. It consists of selected child spondee words which have been band-pass filtered in two frequency bands: one for one channel (ear) and the other for the second channel. The low band extends from 500 to 700 Hz, the high band from 1.9 kHz to 2.1 kHz. The recording begins with pulsed speech spectrum noise, passed through the same filters for the purpose of establishing thresholds for those particular frequency bands. These thresholds are to be used to establish the proper presentation levels. Administration time is approximately four minutes.
