Nonverbal Testing

Researchers recommend hearing professionals use both verbal and nonverbal testing to evaluate patients. Nonverbal testing is especially useful when testing patients: 1) who do not use English as a first language, 2) who have language limitations due to hearing impairment, or 3) who use cochlear implants. Auditec offers a variety of nonverbal tests to suit the unique needs of hearing professionals around the world.

The Sound Effects Recognition Test (SERT) is a picture pointing test that uses sounds like a barking dog, whistling, or a vacuum. It includes instructions and normative data for ages 3-6 as well as the audio CD and the corresponding picture book.

Hearing professionals who are testing adults may find Environmental Sounds (also known as Forty Familiar Sounds) a beneficial test to add to their battery. This recording includes sounds like: bowling, roller coaster, and a babbling brook.  A similar recording called Filtered Environmental Sounds includes those sounds at specified frequencies. These recordings can be employed as the hearing professional sees fit. No normative data or instructions are included; however, a sounds list is included.

Nonverbal tests play a key role in auditory processing.  Auditec offers the Random Gap Detection Test, Gaps In Noise, Pitch Pattern Sequence, Duration Pattern Sequence, and Masking Level Difference-Tone Version to audiologists all over the world. Instructions and score forms (in English) are included with the audio CD purchase.

Minimizing the language barrier in auditory testing opens up a whole new world for hearing professionals to understand the limitations of hearing and processing of their patients.  Nonverbal tests can be valuable tools to help hearing professionals identify hearing problems and diagnose disorders. Whether testing children or adults for either auditory discrimination or auditory processing, Auditec offers nonverbal tests for professionals with even difficult-to-test patients.

PSI

The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test-Standard version is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.

The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.

The PSI-Standard includes both monosyllabic words and and two sets of sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were use to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.

The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children. ⇒What is the difference between the standard and basic version? Auditec recommends purchasing the PSI – Standard Version, which is the full test. It includes the words and two sets of sentence materials which allows for re-testing without having to use the same sentences. However, Auditec also offers the PSI – Basic Version for those with budget restraints. The PSI – Basic Version includes the words and only one set of sentences and should be used on patients who will be tested once.  (The PSI – Standard Version includes the PSI – Basic Version so it is unnecessary to buy both versions.)

*What is the difference between the WIPI First Edition and WIPI Second Edition?

  1. The original authors of the WIPI developed a second edition to clear up the ambiguity of the first edition. In some cases the picture contains a more modern depiction, such as the coke bottle is now 2-liter bottle. About one picture per page was changed.
  2. The word list was changed. Therefore, the WIPI recording must correspond to the correct version.
  3. The WIPI First Edition is available only on CD-Rom. Picture CD-Roms are designed to be displayed on a computer screen; however, customers may print the pictures and place them in a three-ring binder. WIPI pictures must be printed in color to obtain accurate test results. The WIPI Second Edition is available either or CD-Rom or as a printed book.
  4. If you are unsure whether you own the first or second edition, check the color of the cover. If you own one of the old printed WIPI First Edition books, the cover will be either blue or green. The WIPI Second Edition is a dark red/ maroon color.

Does Auditec offer a picture-pointing test for young children in other languages? Yes, a similar test is available in Spanish called the Spanish Pediatric Picture Identification Test. If your pediatric patient speaks a different language, consider employing a test with nonverbal stimuli such as the Sound Effects Recognition Test.
