The Spanish Synthetic Sentence Identification-Ipsilateral Competing Message© is directly analogous to the English version of the Synthetic Sentence Identification. There are 10 sets of 10 synthetic sentences. The competition is a male talker reading a passage.  This ipsilateral competition version has sentences and competition recorded on one track (channel) at various signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). The message-to-competition (MCR) is mixed at -20, -10, 0, +10, -20, -10, 0, +10, 0, & 0 dB per set of 10. It is considered a monaural low-redundancy test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem lesions. It is an auditory figure ground test.

The Spanish Synthetic Sentence Identification- Ipsilateral Competing Message© includes: a) audio test recording, b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The instructions are provided in Spanish. The score forms are provided in English only. English graphs include normative data for hearing aid evaluation only that is based on the English version of this test to be a guideline for administrators of the Spanish version. No normative data is included for the central auditory function; however, the audiologist can uncover useful insight by comparing the patient’s performance on the contralateral and ipsilateral presentations.

This recording has the W-22 Form A (Lists 1-4) opposite Multitalker Noise as competition. The primary signal (word list) is recorded on the left track, and the competition is on the right. This versatile recording can be administered for masking, speech in noise, or words in quiet. With a dual-channel audiometer, the administrator can set their own signal-to-noise ratio by mixing the left and right channels. They can access the left channel only to administer the word lists in quiet.

Dichotic Sentence Identification©

The Dichotic Sentence Identification© (DSI) test is for binaural separation. It was developed to conceive a dichotic listening task that would be only minimally affected by peripheral hearing loss. Sentences selected are presented dichotically. Onsets and offsets of the sentences are aligned with an accuracy of 100 microseconds. The developer contends the DSI is less susceptible to hearing loss than the SSW test. The DSI is a viable test of central auditory function in the hearing impaired population. The test is applicable for use in auditory assessment of impaired ears through pure tone averages (PTAs) up to 50 dB at least. The DSI is made up of two sets of 30 pairs of sentences. Administration time is approximately 12 minutes.

The Dichotic Sentence Identification© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The three-page instructions consist of administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Normative data is included for adults only. It would be reasonable to expect children over the age of eleven to test as well (or nearly as well) as adults.

This portion of the Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy (CIAT) includes dichotic sentences only. There are two lists of 25 sentences for 3-syllable, 4-syllable, 5-syllable, and 6-syllable sentences and one list of 25 sentences for 7-syllables. The patient is instructed to identify both sentences. This therapy can be used on an unlimited number of patients with simple equipment. The CIAT is a tool for remediation and should not be used to diagnose patients.
