Duration Pattern Sequence – Musiek©

The Duration Pattern Sequence is an auditory processing disorder test. It is considered a temporal test using auditory pattern temporal ordering (APTO) and is sensitive to cortical lesions, interhemispheric transfer. The Duration Pattern Sequence – Musiek© version is a test by Dr. Frank Musiek. It is similar to the Duration Pattern Sequence standard version. Test administration is approximately six minutes.

Is the Musiek version or standard version better? Neither version is considered better. Both versions sell popularly and are widely used. Decisions are mainly based on which version the audiologist was originally trained in or by personal preference. Due to the similarities between the standard and Musiek versions, it is usually unnecessary to purchase both versions.

Duration Pattern Sequence-Musiek© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score form as printable pdf files.  The two-page instructions consist of administration and interpretation information. Normative data is included for adults only. It would be reasonable to expect children over the age of eleven to test as well (or nearly as well) as adults. Dichotic Digits-Musiek©

The Dichotic Digits test is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 7 and up using verbal stimuli. It is considered a dichotic test for binaural integration sensitive to brainstem, cortical, and corpus callosal lesions.

Dichotic Digits – Musiek© is a test by Dr. Frank Musiek. This version is similar to the Dichotic Digits standard version.  That is, digits from one to ten are presented dichotically.  One set is single pair; the second is double pair.  Usually, the single pair set is for practice. Dichotic Digits-Musiek version includes the digit “seven.” In contrast, the standard version does not include the digit “seven” since it is a two syllable word in contrast to the other nine digits. The Musiek version includes age-specific normative data on double digits for ages 7 and up. The standard version includes normative data on double digits for ages 11 and up.

Time Compressed Sentence Test©

The Time Compressed Sentence Test© (TCST) is for identifying and quantifying disorders of auditory processing in children specifically the child’s ability to understand acoustically distorted or rapid rates of speech.  In addition, results of testing with the TCST may yield insights into children with slow reaction times and speed of mental processing. It is considered a monaural low redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure -MSC) sensitive to brainstem and cortical lesions. The developer states the TCST can be administered and scored in less than 15 minutes.

The Time Compressed Sentence Test© includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The extensive manual includes administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Age-specific normative data for ages 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10-11  is included. This recording employs spondee words imbedded in speech spectrum noise bursts.  It is in two sections; section 1 is where both the noise and the spondees are in phase, section 2 is where the noise is in phase and the spondees are 180 degrees out of phase. A release from masking is expected in the latter section.

NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II©

The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II© allows the audiologist to reduce the time of testing in cases where the patient has essentially normal word recognition ability.  It is the result of recent research on our original recording by Raymond Hurley and Janet Sells. This is a recording of a male talker.

The lists are ordered from the most difficult to the easiest.  With normal listeners the test can often be terminated after the first 10 words.  This is not a half list; however, there is a provision for termination of the test after 25 words in addition to after the first 10 words. The administration time will vary from 4-21 minutes depending on how well the patient performs.

The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and list. The one-page instructions include method, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is included, but it is not age specific. Available from Auditec, Inc. Use the “Buy Now” button below or call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. Pediatric Speech Intelligibility©

The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test© is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.

The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.

The PSI includes both monosyllabic words and and two sets of sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were used to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.

The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children.
