Audiology Equipment Advice

Occasionally, Auditec receives questions about purchasing audiology equipment. Does Auditec sell equipment? What CD player should I buy? Will your CDs work with my audiometer? What equipment do you recommend? fb VU Meter Info web page Auditec does not sell any equipment and does not endorse any brand. This affords us the opportunity to offer some unbiased advice on buying equipment.

To start, consider how your equipment can satisfy your specific needs. Ask yourself some questions to evaluate your needs. How much physical space do I have for my equipment? What is my budget? Will I need portable equipment? What is the age range of my patients?

Auditec compact discs play in all CD players and everywhere else you can play standard audio CDs (like computers). CD players sound pretty much the same no matter how expensive they are so you can save a few dollars by purchasing a relatively inexpensive CD player. Since CDs can degrade when you leave them in the player, we do not recommend buying a multi-disc changer. If you may need to test in other locations, you may consider purchasing a portable CD player. (This article was edited on March 23, 2017 to include recent research by Jennifer M. Brace and Robert W. Keith.) Recent research has concluded normal listeners tested using the mp3 audio files of speech discrimination tests produce the same valid results as when tested using the wav audio files on compact discs.

There are a variety of audiometers on the market. Regardless of what brand you choose, make sure you purchase a two-channel audiometer. Even some of the most basic Auditec recordings have different information recorded to the left and right channels. For instance, a word list may be recorded to the left channel while noise is recorded to the right. If you want to use the word list in quiet, you could use your left channel only. If you want to mix it with noise, you would use your left and right channels. Be sure your equipment is set up properly from the very start. If possible, spend some time getting to know your audiometer dealer and hold onto his or her contact information in case you have questions in the future.

Some of the best audiologists are not skilled in technology use. If that’s you, make sure the audiometer you select is easy to operate. Some audiometers come with speech already loaded on them. Unfortunately, we have heard some horror stories about the quality and clarity of these pre-loaded recordings. Make certain that your audiometer does not limit your test selection so that you can improve, expand, and update your test library in the future.

If you plan to accept pediatric patients, it may be useful to have a computer in the testing room. Some tests for young children (like NU-CHIPs) include pictures as pdf files so patients can view the pictures on their computers. Some Auditec customers have reported that the use of a computer engages children better than the use of a book. However, convenience or a lack of space may cause you to prefer simply purchase a classic NU-CHIPs picture book or use the picture CD-Rom to print the pictures and put them in a three-ring binder.

Ultimately, the evaluation of your specific needs and preferences should shape your decisions about the best audiology equipment for you. Whether you are just starting out or considering a change, Auditec wishes you the very best luck as you shop for audiology equipment that is appropriate and easy to use.

Auditory Continuous Performance Test (ACPT)

The Auditory Continuous Performance Test (ACPT) was developed to screen for auditory attention deficits. It can aid in the diagnosis of ADD or ADHD in children 6 through 11. The child listens to a list of words and raises a thumb every time he or she hears the target word. Total test time is approximately 15 minutes. Watch the video! (See below.)

The ACPT includes a) audio recording, b) manual and score forms¹ as printable pdf files. The 46-page manual is comprised of sections on administration and scoring, interpretation, and test development. Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy

ciat

The Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy (CIAT) is a dichotic listening therapy program based on Dichotic Interaural Intensity Difference (DIID) training.

The CIAT is a superior therapy program because of its many benefits. Some benefits include: 1) twelve hours of recorded dichotic materials for therapy, 2) manual with overview, background, score sheets, etc. 3) can be used on an unlimited number of patients, 4) uses a combination of scored exercises to be given by an administrator as well as a portion that can be self-administered, and 5) can be used with simple equipment (a CD player and headphones).

Designed for persons with specific ear deficits on dichotic listening tests (including children with dyslexia, persons with hypersensitivity to noise, adults with aphasia, or anyone who would like to improve their listening ability), the program employs recorded dichotic stimuli for specifically for the purpose of strengthening auditory processing by targeting an individual’s weaker ear through dichotic listening. Dichotic listening therapy activities can be of assistance to a person with a weak ear, will help with attention, and can facilitate listening in noise.

The CIAT program was developed by Annette Hurley, Ph.D and D. Bradley Davis, AuD, Department of Communication disorders, LSU Health Sciences Center. It consists of exercises employing numbers, syllables, words, and sentences of various lengths that are scored. Short stories, fables and a longer story could be self-administered. All are dichotic exercises. The competition is either of the same genre i.e. number vs. number or four talker babble.

The CIAT has been purchased by hospitals, private practices, school systems and parents.  Several customers who purchased the Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy (CIAT) reported positive results back to us.  They say that their patients are showing real progress. One example of a positive report of Dr. Hurley’s therapy states: “…my  daughter went from a deficit to very high normal ability…” If you think the CIAT might be right for your organization, email auditecinfo@auditec.com for a CIAT manual excerpt and supporting materials as pdf files. A free demo link is also available.

The CIAT Standard program is the full 12-CD set with exercises, short stories, and long story. It includes a) manual and score forms as printable pdf files, b) audio recording of Discs 1-12 for administrator, c) backup of Discs 5-12 for professionals to loan to their patients for self-administration, d) portable CD player with headphones. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

Dichotic Digits-Standard version includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. LNT/MLNT

The Lexical Neighborhood/Multisyllabic Lexical Neighborhood Tests (LNT-MLNT) were developed primarily for use with cochlear implant children.  Determining the benefits of sensory aids (i.e. hearing aids or cochlear implants) is essential for the proper management of hearing impaired children.  Open-set word recognition tests have provided important diagnostic information relative to the benefits of sensory aids.  The information garnered from these tests indicates the extent of neural representation of words in a child’s long-term lexical memory.

The most used open-set word recognition test for children has been the PBK-50 lists.  However, it has been noted that for hearing-impaired children the PBK-50 does not assess the abilities of these children validly.  The LNT-MLNT has been shown to be a more sensitive measure of spoken word recognition in these children.

The LNT-MLNT was developed along theoretically motivated current models of spoken word recognition in listeners with hearing impairment.   The development of the LNT-MLNT was based on the assumptions of the Neighborhood Activation Model (NAM), which proposes that words are organized into “similarity neighborhoods” based on their frequency of occurrence in the language and the number of phonemically similar words, or neighbors, within the lexical neighborhood.  A dense lexical neighborhood contains many phonemically similar words, whereas a sparse lexical neighborhood has few phonemically similar words.  Words that occur often and come from sparse lexical neighborhoods are easier for children to identify than words with the opposite lexical characteristics.

The stimulus words for the LNT-MLNT were selected according to two criteria: 1. The words had to be familiar to young children with limited vocabularies. 2. The selection was based on current models (NAM) of word recognition and lexical access.  Stimuli on the LNT-MLNT are separated into easy and hard word lists.

The LNT/MLNT includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The nineteen-page manual includes administration information and normative data for children. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.
