Gaps In Noise (GIN)©

The Gaps In Noise (GIN)© test is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 7 and older using non-verbal stimuli. It is designed to measure temporal resolution.  Temporal resolution refers to the ability to detect changes either in the duration of an auditory stimulus and/or the time intervals or gaps of silence embedded within an auditory stimulus.  The ability to detect small silent intervals is an important factor in speech perception. This GIN test is a  valuable test for the evaluation of this ability.

The GIN test is composed of a series or lists of noise bursts which contain various intervals of silence.  The recording consists of four forms called lists plus a shorter practice list to ensure the patient understands the task.  The silent intervals vary from 0 (i.e. no gap) to 20 msec.  The gaps, or periods of silence, are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20 msec.  There are a total of 60 randomized gaps (6 of each gap) in each list (series). Administration time is approximately 35 minutes. To facilitate accurate scoring the recording is two channels, one being the test track, the other, for the examiner, indicates with a brief tone when the gap occurs in the other (test) track.

The Gaps In Noise (GIN)© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The three-page instructions include information on administration, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is included for ages 8 and up. ©COPYRIGHT NOTICE: Auditec’s materials are protected by copyright. Each product represents one license for up to two audiometers at one location. Sharing, uploading to servers, publishing to the internet, and all other forms of distribution are prohibited.

Dichotic Word Listening Test©

The Dichotic Word Listening Test© (DWLT) is popular with audiologists and psychologists. It is often considered an auditory processing disorder test. It was developed specifically to demonstrate relative unilateral extinction or suppressions in neurologic patients with focal electrophysiological lesions, neuropsychiatric patients whose symptoms are presumed to be associated with underlying electrophysiological dysfunction and patients with so-called “subclinical” EEG abnormalities following closed head injury. Since observations indicate that multiple neuropathological processes impair dichotic listening performance, the DWLT may prove relevant to investigation of brainstem disorders, subcortical lesions, etc.

The DWLT stimuli are common words varying in length from one to three syllables.  The test is in two equivalent parts with 10 practice items and 30 test items in each part.

The Dichotic Word Listening Test© includes a) audio recording, b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The five-page instructions consist of background, administration, scoring, and interpretation. The instructions include grade-specific normative data for kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, and sixth grades as well as adults.

California Consonant Test©

The California Consonant Test© (CCT) is considered a word recognition (or speech discrimination) test. It is a closed-set word recognition test. The patient is given a paper score sheet with four multiple choices per item. He or she is asked to check the item heard on the recording.  Watch the video! (See below.)

The California Consonant Test© is particularly sensitive to high frequency hearing loss and is, therefore, considered to be useful in hearing aid evaluations. The CCT consists of two 100-word lists. This test does not correlate highly with “phonetically balanced” word recognition tests such as the W-22 or NU-6, nor does it correlate with degree of hearing loss. Therefore, the CCT cannot be employed as a substitute for the more popular word recognition tests. Administration time is from 15-30 minutes.

The California Consonant Test© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score form. The two-page instructions include information on development and interpretation. One-page patient instructions are also included.

Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL)

The Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL) is an audio recording of 21 auditory training lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 20-30 minutes and consists of words, phrases, and sentences. (NOTE: The phrases from Lesson 18 have been omitted.) The task is to mark a response form while listening to an audio recording. The words, spoken in isolation, are paired for contrast. The phrases and sentences are completion tasks which employ many of the words in the word section. The lessons can be used either individually (self-administering) or in a group setting (under a clinician’s guidance). This recording is suitable for adults and children old enough to understand the task and vocabulary. The video demonstration (below) shows what the person will see on their response form while listening to the audio recording.

This product includes a) audio recording, and b) patient instructions, response forms, and answer forms as printable pdf files. The one-page patient instructions are sufficient to understand the tasks. Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL)

The Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL) test uses oral production of the letters of the alphabet. It is a closed-set of the 26 letters. Responses may be oral, by sign, or by pointing to a response board (supplied). The test consists of five forms; all 26 letters are used. Scoring is weighted by the proximity of the response to the phonetic content of the letter. Watch the video! (See below.)

The APAL was developed for use with hearing impaired children for whom the more standard tests are unsuitable. Children may be unfamiliar with some of the pictured items on the WIPI©, PSI©, or NU-CHIPS©, or some of the PBK-50 words may not be in the child’s vocabulary or the child’s speech may be unintelligible, or the materials may be too easy or uninteresting. In these cases, the APAL may prove useful. The administration time of the APAL is approximately 16 minutes.

The APAL includes: 1) audio test recording, 2) alphabet letter easel, and 3) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The two-page instructions encompass sections on test candidates, procedure, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is provided, but it is not age-specific.
