Nonverbal Testing

Researchers recommend hearing professionals use both verbal and nonverbal testing to evaluate patients. Nonverbal testing is especially useful when testing patients: 1) who do not use English as a first language, 2) who have language limitations due to hearing impairment, or 3) who use cochlear implants. Auditec offers a variety of nonverbal tests to suit the unique needs of hearing professionals around the world.

The Sound Effects Recognition Test (SERT) is a picture pointing test that uses sounds like a barking dog, whistling, or a vacuum. It includes instructions and normative data for ages 3-6 as well as the audio CD and the corresponding picture book.

Hearing professionals who are testing adults may find Environmental Sounds (also known as Forty Familiar Sounds) a beneficial test to add to their battery. This recording includes sounds like: bowling, roller coaster, and a babbling brook.  A similar recording called Filtered Environmental Sounds includes those sounds at specified frequencies. These recordings can be employed as the hearing professional sees fit. No normative data or instructions are included; however, a sounds list is included.

Nonverbal tests play a key role in auditory processing.  Auditec offers the Random Gap Detection Test, Gaps In Noise, Pitch Pattern Sequence, Duration Pattern Sequence, and Masking Level Difference-Tone Version to audiologists all over the world. Instructions and score forms (in English) are included with the audio CD purchase.

Minimizing the language barrier in auditory testing opens up a whole new world for hearing professionals to understand the limitations of hearing and processing of their patients.  Nonverbal tests can be valuable tools to help hearing professionals identify hearing problems and diagnose disorders. Whether testing children or adults for either auditory discrimination or auditory processing, Auditec offers nonverbal tests for professionals with even difficult-to-test patients.

Are MP3s Appropriate for Auditory Testing?

Auditec, Inc. is proud to be a small business with a long history. We have been serving professionals with auditory test materials in a variety of formats since 1972.

Long before the Sony Walkman was invented, Auditec sold its auditory test recordings on reels.

Next, Auditec sold auditory test materials on cassette tapes. Believe it or not, we still get requests for this discontinued format. At one point in time, Auditec even made its recordings available on digital audio tapes (DATs).

cUSTOM

Now, Auditec provides quality audio recordings on compact discs. Customers can combine multiple recordings to one disc and play it using their CD player or computer.

MP3s are a convenient next step for professionals who want to use portable equipment that does not take up a lot of space like iPods, iPads, and MP3 players. (This article was edited on March 23, 2017 to include recent research by Jennifer M. Brace and Robert W. Keith.) Recent research has concluded normal listeners tested using the mp3 audio files of speech discrimination tests produce the same valid results as when tested using the wav audio files on compact discs.

Spondees

The Spondees is a speech threshold (speech reception threshold-SRT) recording. The Spondees, also known as CID W-1, are two-syllable words with equal stress on each syllable, which are employed to obtain thresholds for speech. There are two randomizations of 36 spondaic words spoken without a carrier phrase for adults. The median speech reception threshold (SRT) for normal listeners is 20 dB SPL (0dBHL).

The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

Spondees includes a) audio recording and b) printed word list. This product does not include instructions or normative data. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s auditory tests are well trained in the use, purpose, and interpretation of basic tests. Available Auditec, Inc.Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. BKB-SIN©

The BKB-SIN© test is a speech in noise test for children. It was developed for children (ages 5 and up), cochlear implant patients, and adults for whom the QuickSIN© test is too difficult. Other uses include: demonstrating the benefits of amplification, predicting performance with hearing aids in loud, noisy environments, assessing directional microphone performance, estimating children’s performance for soft speech, and screening for auditory processing disorders in children.

The BKB-SIN© uses 18 equivalent list pairs for estimating SNR loss. It features Bramford-Kowal-Bench sentences in four talker babble, uses easier sentences than the QuickSIN©, and has norms for children, adults, and cochlear implant users. CD 1 (Standard BKB-SIN) has the target talker and background babble recorded on the same channel of the CD, at pre-recorded signal-to-noise ratios.  CD 2 (Split Track BKB-SIN) has the target talker and background babble recorded on separate channels of the CD.

The BKB-SIN© includes a) audio recording (CD1 and CD2), and b) manual and score forms. The 27-page manual is comprised of administration, interpretation, and development. Normative data for ages 5 and up is included.

Random Gap Detection Test© – Standard & Expanded

The Random Gap Detection Test© -Standard and Expanded version is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 5 and up using non-verbal stimuli. It is considered a temporal test using temporal resolution and is sensitive to cortical particularly left temporal lobe lesions.

The Random Gap Detection Test© (RGDT)-Standard and Expanded includes the standard RGDT in its entirety along with an expanded portion at the end. The expanded portion of the test is included for individuals whose gap detection threshold exceeds 40 msec.  This test begins at time intervals longer than those measured by the standard portion of the RGDT, and includes time intervals of 10 msec. between 40 and 100 msec, and 50 msec. intervals between 100 and 300 msec.  The expanded portion of the test is administered in the same manner as the standard portion.

Individuals who require the expanded portion of the test have already demonstrated abnormal temporal processing abilities. The single purpose is to determine the time interval in which their gap detection thresholds exist. This information can be used to measure improvement in temporal processing abilities following remediation. By definition, patients with temporal processing disorders will have a wide range of gap detection thresholds. Therefore, there are no normative data associated with the expanded portion of the RGDT.

The Random Gap Detection Test©-Standard and Expanded includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The 31-page manual pertains to the standard portion of the test. It is comprised of sections on development, background, administration, and interpretation. It includes normative data for ages 5 and up. An additional sheet with sections on administration and interpretation is included for the expanded portion of the test. Available from Auditec, Inc. Use the “Buy Now” button below or call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.
