Therapy in Action

The power to help your patients is within reach. If your patient has a specific ear deficit on dichotic listening tasks, consider the Constraint-Induced Auditory Training Program (CIAT). It is appropriate therapy for children with dyslexia, persons with hypersensitivity to noise, adults with aphasia, or anyone who would like to improve their listening ability. The most common question we get about this training program is: what would this therapy look like inside my organization?

One of the greatest advantages to CIAT therapy is the enormous selection of materials. Twelve compact discs of recorded material is included in the standard version. Another benefit of the CIAT is the included manual on CD-Rom. It provides a wealth of information like an overview, background, case studies, exercises and worksheets. The only equipment you need is a CD player and stereo headphones. You might begin by asking your patient (or patient’s parents) to commit to two 30-minute sessions for six weeks. You can be flexible and slow down the program or accelerate the program to suit the patient’s needs.

Therapy begins with over two CDs with exercises like dichotic digits, dichotic consonant-vowels, dichotic letters, and dichotic sentences. The patient will listen and respond as the therapist scores. After the exercises are complete, the patient moves onto short stories in noise and then a much longer story in noise. The stories are a listening task with no set exercise or scoring, but the therapist may ask occasional questions about what is happening in the story to make sure the listener is engaged.  Auditec now  includes a complimentary backup of the longer story (discs 5-12) with every purchase of the CIAT – Standard and Longer Story versions. This backup allows professionals to loan this portion of the CIAT to their patients for self-administration at home.

Auditec has received positive feedback about the use of this program. Their patients are experiencing improvement thanks to their caring audiologists. Will your patients be next? Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy

ciat

The Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy (CIAT) is a dichotic listening therapy program based on Dichotic Interaural Intensity Difference (DIID) training.

The CIAT is a superior therapy program because of its many benefits. Some benefits include: 1) twelve hours of recorded dichotic materials for therapy, 2) manual with overview, background, score sheets, etc. 3) can be used on an unlimited number of patients, 4) uses a combination of scored exercises to be given by an administrator as well as a portion that can be self-administered, and 5) can be used with simple equipment (a CD player and headphones).

Designed for persons with specific ear deficits on dichotic listening tests (including children with dyslexia, persons with hypersensitivity to noise, adults with aphasia, or anyone who would like to improve their listening ability), the program employs recorded dichotic stimuli for specifically for the purpose of strengthening auditory processing by targeting an individual’s weaker ear through dichotic listening. Dichotic listening therapy activities can be of assistance to a person with a weak ear, will help with attention, and can facilitate listening in noise.

The CIAT program was developed by Annette Hurley, Ph.D and D. Bradley Davis, AuD, Department of Communication disorders, LSU Health Sciences Center. It consists of exercises employing numbers, syllables, words, and sentences of various lengths that are scored. Short stories, fables and a longer story could be self-administered. All are dichotic exercises. The competition is either of the same genre i.e. number vs. number or four talker babble.

The CIAT has been purchased by hospitals, private practices, school systems and parents.  Several customers who purchased the Constraint-Induced Auditory Therapy (CIAT) reported positive results back to us.  They say that their patients are showing real progress. One example of a positive report of Dr. Hurley’s therapy states: “…my  daughter went from a deficit to very high normal ability…” If you think the CIAT might be right for your organization, email auditecinfo@auditec.com for a CIAT manual excerpt and supporting materials as pdf files. Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL)

The Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL) is an audio recording of 21 auditory training lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 20-30 minutes and consists of words, phrases, and sentences. (NOTE: The phrases from Lesson 18 have been omitted.) The task is to mark a response form while listening to an audio recording. The words, spoken in isolation, are paired for contrast. The lessons can be used either individually (self-administering) or in a group setting (under a clinician’s guidance). This recording is suitable for adults and children old enough to understand the task and vocabulary. The video demonstration (below) shows what the person will see on their response form while listening to the audio recording.

The one-page patient instructions are sufficient to understand the tasks.
