It is considered appropriate for ages 11 and up. The primary signal consists of ten synthetic sentences. The competition is a male talker reading a passage. This ipsilateral competition version has sentences and competition recorded on one track (channel) at various signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). This +10 & 0 version has the message-to-competition (MCR) mixed at +10, +10, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, & 0 dB per set of 10. It is considered a monaural low-redundancy test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem lesions. It is an auditory figure ground test.

This recording has the NU-6 Form A (Lists 1-4) opposite Multitalker Noise as competition. The primary signal (word list) is recorded on the left track, and the competition is on the right. This versatile recording can be administered for masking, speech in noise, or words in quiet. NU-6 OD II Short Interval©

The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II Short Interval© allows the audiologist to reduce the time of testing in cases where the patient has essentially normal word recognition ability. It is the result of recent research on our original recording by Raymond Hurley and Janet Sells. The lists are ordered from the most difficult to the easiest. With normal listeners the test can often be terminated after the first 10 words. This is not a half list; however, there is a provision for termination of the test after 25 words in addition to after the first 10 words.

This short-interval version of the test gives the patient 2.5 seconds to respond instead of the standard four seconds. It is yet another way to effectively speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly. The administration time will vary from 2-16 minutes depending on how well the patient performs.

This version of Multitalker Noise -20 Talkers© was developed by Tom Frank. Twenty young adults were recorded simultaneously reading different passages. It is a babble, obviously speech, but completely unintelligible so that it is less likely to be a semantic distracter than Four Talkers, a single talker or perhaps cafeteria noise. The level is remarkably stable over time.
