California Consonant Test©

The California Consonant Test© (CCT) is considered a word recognition (or speech discrimination) test. It is a closed-set word recognition test. The patient is given a paper score sheet with four multiple choices per item. He or she is asked to check the item heard on the recording.  Watch the video! (See below.)

The California Consonant Test© is particularly sensitive to high frequency hearing loss and is, therefore, considered to be useful in hearing aid evaluations. The CCT consists of two 100-word lists. This test does not correlate highly with “phonetically balanced” word recognition tests such as the W-22 or NU-6, nor does it correlate with degree of hearing loss. Therefore, the CCT cannot be employed as a substitute for the more popular word recognition tests. Administration time is from 15-30 minutes.

The California Consonant Test© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score form. The two-page instructions include information on development and interpretation. One-page patient instructions are also included.

Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL)

The Auditory Training Lessons© (ATL) is an audio recording of 21 auditory training lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 20-30 minutes and consists of words, phrases, and sentences. (NOTE: The phrases from Lesson 18 have been omitted.) The task is to mark a response form while listening to an audio recording. The words, spoken in isolation, are paired for contrast. The phrases and sentences are completion tasks which employ many of the words in the word section. The lessons can be used either individually (self-administering) or in a group setting (under a clinician’s guidance). This recording is suitable for adults and children old enough to understand the task and vocabulary. The video demonstration (below) shows what the person will see on their response form while listening to the audio recording.

This product includes a) audio recording, and b) patient instructions, response forms, and answer forms as printable pdf files. The one-page patient instructions are sufficient to understand the tasks. Normative data is not provided since this product is for therapy and not for examination.  It is assumed that the purchaser of this product understands its use and purpose.

Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL)

The Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL) test uses oral production of the letters of the alphabet. It is a closed-set of the 26 letters. Responses may be oral, by sign, or by pointing to a response board (supplied). The test consists of five forms; all 26 letters are used. Scoring is weighted by the proximity of the response to the phonetic content of the letter. Watch the video! (See below.)

The APAL was developed for use with hearing impaired children for whom the more standard tests are unsuitable. Children may be unfamiliar with some of the pictured items on the WIPI©, PSI©, or NU-CHIPS©, or some of the PBK-50 words may not be in the child’s vocabulary or the child’s speech may be unintelligible, or the materials may be too easy or uninteresting. In these cases, the APAL may prove useful. The administration time of the APAL is approximately 16 minutes.

The APAL includes: 1) audio test recording, 2) alphabet letter easel, and 3) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The two-page instructions encompass sections on test candidates, procedure, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is provided, but it is not age-specific.

Child Spondees

The Child Spondees is considered a speech threshold (or speech reception threshold-SRT) test. It is a list of spondaic words that was selected to be familiar to children. Auditec recorded 51 words in one randomization. The medium SRT is 20 dB SPL. (Consider Picture Spondee Words for young or non-verbal patients.)

The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

Child Spondees includes a) audio recording and b) printed word list. This product does not include administration instructions or normative data. Santiago APD Battery©

The Santiago APD Battery© includes the following Spanish language tests:

  • Spanish Dichotic Digits
  • Spanish Filtered Speech
  • Spanish Binaural Fusion
  • Spanish Speech in Noise (at +10 dB and 0 dB signal-to-noise ratios)

The Santiago APD Battery© (SAPD) is a set of four tests that assess (central) auditory processing (AP) in native Spanish-speaking adults. SAPD was developed by Adrian Fuente, Ph.D. of the Audiology Lab School of Speech and Hearing Sciences Medical Faculty, University of Chile. Since auditory processing includes various auditory abilities, different tests should be carried out to assess AP.  Some of these tests utilize verbal stimuli while others do not. For those auditory abilities that require verbal material to be assessed, e.g., dichotic listening, auditory performance in competing acoustic signals and auditory performance with degraded acoustic materials, tests with verbal stimuli in the language of the patient must be used. The SAPD battery was created because of this need. The aim of these tests is to assess some of the aspects of AP in Spanish-speaking adult patients suspected to have APD and/or with hearing complaints other than those associated with reduced hearing thresholds.

Each of the tests aims to assess different aspects of central auditory processing.

  • Speech-in-noise requires recognition of monosyllable in the presence of white noise, according to ASHA (1996) it fits the low redundancy monaural speech category.
  • Filtered Speech requires recognition of monosyllables that have been low pass filtered, a low redundancy category.
  • Binaural fusion requires recognition of monosyllables whose low frequency spectrum is presented to one ear and high frequency spectrum simultaneously to the other ear, this test is in the binaural interaction category.
  • Dichotic digits requires the patient to repeat two pairs of digits which are presented simultaneously to both ears, it is in the dichotic speech category.

Auditec recommends buying the Santiago APD Battery© as a full set. However, Auditec sells the tests individually as well for those with budget restraints.  Normative data was derived from a population of native Spanish speaking persons living in Chile.  As in any language, there are differences in dialect and one needs to verify these data on the local population.

The Santiago APD Battery© includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files on CDRom. The extensive manual is provided in both Spanish and English. It includes administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Normative data is included for adults only. It can be assumed children over the age of 12 will do as well (or nearly as well) as adults.

Speech In Noise©

The Speech in Noise© (SIN) test was developed to help determine how much a given hearing aid or pair of hearing aids helps an individual understand speech in a background of noise, compared to listening unaided or with other hearing aids. The test consists of a series of female-talker recordings of the IEEE (modified Harvard) sentences as the target speech, and four-talker babble (three women and one man) as the noise source. Five sentences are recorded at each of four signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios: 15 dB, 10 dB, 5 dB and 0 dB S/N, all at the 0 dB VU meter calibration level, followed by a similar series recorded at a signal level 30 dB lower than the calibration level (-30 dB re 0 VU).

Therefore, there are 20 sentences at each level for a total of 40 sentences (or 4 IEEE lists), all of which constitutes a block. There are nine blocks of the SIN test, so that nine comparisons can be made without repeating sentences. Each listening condition takes approximately twelve minutes to administer.

The Speech in Noise© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The instructions provide information on administration.
