Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL)

The Auditory Perception of Alphabet Letters© (APAL) test uses oral production of the letters of the alphabet. It is a closed-set of the 26 letters. Responses may be oral, by sign, or by pointing to a response board (supplied). The test consists of five forms; all 26 letters are used. Scoring is weighted by the proximity of the response to the phonetic content of the letter. Watch the video! (See below.)

The APAL was developed for use with hearing impaired children for whom the more standard tests are unsuitable. Children may be unfamiliar with some of the pictured items on the WIPI©, PSI©, or NU-CHIPS©, or some of the PBK-50 words may not be in the child’s vocabulary or the child’s speech may be unintelligible, or the materials may be too easy or uninteresting. In these cases, the APAL may prove useful. The administration time of the APAL is approximately 16 minutes.

The APAL includes: 1) alphabet letter easel, 2) audio test recording, 3) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The two-page instructions encompass sections on test candidates, procedure, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is provided, but it is not age-specific.

Child Spondees

The Child Spondees is considered a speech threshold (or speech reception threshold-SRT) test. It is a list of spondaic words that was selected to be familiar to children. AUDiTEC™ recorded 51 words in one randomization. The medium SRT is 20 dB SPL. (Consider Picture Spondee Words for young or non-verbal patients.)

The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

Child Spondees includes a) audio recording and b) printed word list. This product does not include administration instructions or normative data. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s products are well trained in their use, purpose, and interpretation. Selective Auditory Attention Test© (SAAT)

The Selective Auditory Attention Test© (SAAT) is a monaural low-redundancy speech test. It was developed to aid in the early identification of young children who have poor ability to attend (attention deficit), especially in noise. The SAAT is a closed set picture pointing task, employing the Word Intelligibility by Picture Identification First Edition (WIPI 1st Ed.) words and pictures. SAAT consists of two parts, two lists of WIPI 1st Ed. words in quiet and two lists imbedded (mixed) in a semantic distractor, which is a competing message (an interesting story). The signal-to-noise ratio is a nominal 0 dB. The SAAT can be given with earphones or over a loudspeaker.

The Selective Auditory Attention Test© (SAAT) includes a) SAAT audio recording, and b) WIPI 1st Ed. Picture pdf file, and c) SAAT instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The seventeen-page instructions include information on administration, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is included for ages four through nine.
