MULTIPLE AUDITORY PROCESSING ASSESSMENT VERSION 2 (MAPA 2)©

The MAPA-2© is a comprehensive assessment of auditory processing and listening skills. It may be used as a screener to be followed by other behavioral or physiological tests or it may be used for a preliminary diagnosis in the auditory area. The test is administered via CD and can be used in a clinical setting or a sound booth. Administration time is 30-40 minutes.

The MAPA-2 includes eight different subtests in the three domains (monaural, temporal, and binaural) that ASHA and AAA recommend for auditory processing assessment along with the Scale of Auditory Behaviors, a 12-item parent or teacher completed questionnaire of listening behaviors.

Monaural: Evaluate an individual’s ability to use low redundancy information.

  1. Monaural-Selective Attention Test (MSAAT): Assesses an individual’s ability to recognize monosyllabic words with and without competing background noise of high-interest speech
  2. Speech in Noise for Children (SINCA): Assesses an individual’s ability to recognize monosyllabic word pairs presented with competing pink noise at progressively decreasing signal-to-noise ratios

Temporal: Evaluate an individual’s ability to use acoustic information over time.

  3. Tap Test: Assesses an individual’s ability to recognize and label an auditory pattern
  4. Pitch Pattern Test: Assesses an individual’s ability to use cues including rate and pattern and to label what is heard

Binaural: Evaluate an individual’s ability to use unique information presented simultaneously to each ear.

  5. Dichotic Digits: Assesses an individual’s ability to recognize digit sequences when digit pairs are presented simultaneously to each ear
  6. Competing Sentences: Assesses an individual’s ability to recognize more complex language sequences presented simultaneously to each ear

Supplemental Subtests: Additional tests that can be used to assess an individual’s skill in the temporal area.

  7. Duration Pattern Test: Assesses an individual’s ability to use cues including rate and pattern and to label what is heard
  8. Gap Detection Test: Assesses an individual’s temporal resolution abilities using intervals of varying length between stimuli

The MAPA 2© includes a) audio recording, b) manual, c) behavior forms (quantity: 25) , and d) score forms (quantity: 25). The extensive manual includes normative data for ages 7-14.

Dichotic Digits – Standard©

The Dichotic Digits-Standard© test is an auditory processing disorder test using verbal stimuli. It is considered a dichotic test for binaural integration sensitive to brainstem, cortical, and corpus callosal lesions.

This established test assesses the ability to process different materials arriving at the ears simultaneously. Fifty sets of digits, one through nine (except seven, having two syllables) are presented either in single pairs or double pairs. The digits begin and end simultaneously. Administration time is approximately ten minutes.

Dichotic Digits-Standard© includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The one-page instructions consist of administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Normative data¹ for double digits is included; however, it is only available for ages 11 and up.

LNT/MLNT©

The Lexical Neighborhood/Multisyllabic Lexical Neighborhood Tests (LNT-MLNT)© were developed primarily for use with cochlear implant children.  Determining the benefits of sensory aids (i.e. hearing aids or cochlear implants) is essential for the proper management of hearing impaired children.  Open-set word recognition tests have provided important diagnostic information relative to the benefits of sensory aids.  The information garnered from these tests indicates the extent of neural representation of words in a child’s long-term lexical memory.

The most used open-set word recognition test for children has been the PBK-50 lists.  However, it has been noted that for hearing-impaired children the PBK-50 does not assess the abilities of these children validly.  The LNT-MLNT© has been shown to be a more sensitive measure of spoken word recognition in these children.

The LNT-MLNT© was developed along theoretically motivated current models of spoken word recognition in listeners with hearing impairment.   The development of this test was based on the assumptions of the Neighborhood Activation Model (NAM), which proposes that words are organized into “similarity neighborhoods” based on their frequency of occurrence in the language and the number of phonemically similar words, or neighbors, within the lexical neighborhood.  A dense lexical neighborhood contains many phonemically similar words, whereas a sparse lexical neighborhood has few phonemically similar words.  Words that occur often and come from sparse lexical neighborhoods are easier for children to identify than words with the opposite lexical characteristics.

The stimulus words for this test were selected according to two criteria: 1. The words had to be familiar to young children with limited vocabularies. 2. The selection was based on current models (NAM) of word recognition and lexical access.  Stimuli on this test are separated into easy and hard word lists.

The LNT/MLNT© includes a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The nineteen-page manual includes administration information and normative data for children. ©COPYRIGHT NOTICE: Auditec’s materials are protected by copyright. Each product represents one license for up to two audiometers at one location. Sharing, uploading to servers, publishing to the internet, and all other forms of distribution are prohibited.

Spondees

The Spondees (Forms & B) is a speech threshold (speech reception threshold-SRT) recording. The Spondees, also known as CID W-1, are two-syllable words with equal stress on each syllable, which are employed to obtain thresholds for speech. Forms A & B are two randomizations of the same 36 spondaic words spoken without a carrier phrase for adults. The median speech reception threshold (SRT) for normal listeners is 20 dB SPL (0dBHL).

The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

Spondees (Forms A & B) includes a) audio recording and b) printed word list. This product does not include instructions or normative data. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s auditory tests are well trained in the use, purpose, and interpretation of basic tests.
